Our EMBS Chapter
The Buenaventura Chapter of the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society is one of the most active chapters of the IEEE Buenaventura Section, the Los Angeles area Sections, and the EMB Society as a whole.
 Nationally known speakers have attracted an audience that drive on the average 40 miles round trip to attend our events. Six colleges / universities encourage their bioengineering students to attend the sessions, some for extra credit. Doctors and medical staff from neighboring hospitals join the audience.
The IEEE Buenaventura Section is the local volunteer representation of IEEE, the largest technical society in the world, with 400,000 members. The IEEE Buenaventura Section is one of the most active in IEEE Region Six, which includes the other Los Angeles-area Sections as well as the rest of California and the Western United States. About 1,000 IEEE members live or work in Ventura County. Our group is a non-profit 401(c)3 organization.
The mission of our Section is to:
- Align great speakers in various fields of engineering to make it convenient for engineers/scientists/technical educators from Ventura County to remain relevant about advances in their field
- Inspire local high school and college students to enter STEM careers and reserve funds for engineering scholarships
- Help individuals in the process of choosing a technical career or finding a new technical job
- Encourage engineers to sharpen their skills and reach their full potential

We organize many events, free of charge to the community most of the time:
- More than 50 speaker talks each year. We cover the following engineering areas of expertise: aerospace, communications, biology and medicine, electronic devices, circuity systems, microwave, robotics, automation process, and photonics/imaging.
- Career events for middle schools, high schools and colleges in Ventura County
- Entrepreneurship workshops
- Networking events to align graduates to employers or professionals in transition to potential opportunities.
Dr. Michael Bates, Head of School at La Reina High School in Thousand Oaks, receives the 2015 IEEE Outstanding pre-college award from Doug Askegard, IEEE Southern Area Chair. La Reina High School is recognized for its STEM education initiatives that accelerate the learning of science and math from grades 7-12. The school has a remarkable placement in college: 100% of the high school graduates enter college.
